Speak.
A downloadable game
Find your voice among the noise. Made for the Women In Games Jam, using the theme 'breaking barriers'.
Winner of Overall Enjoyment, Gameplay Design and Audio Design.
Speak is inspired by a number of factors. Firstly, the experience of trying to have my voice heard and listened to in a male-dominated profession. Secondly, my personal experience of coming to terms with and voicing a traumatic event in my life. Thirdly, the wider experiences and stories of women from the #MeToo movement.
The original idea was of collecting the tokens, representing the opportunity to speak, and as more tokens are collected, more and more voices try to drown out your own. I wanted these represented not only in the audio design, but in the visuals, with more and more assets crowding the screen and making your progress even more difficult. This mechanic was not implemented in the final submission to the WIGJam due to time, but it is one I hope to go back and implement once I have time after my bachelors.
The soundtrack was created by Ashley Keep, and becomes purposefully distorted and more uncomfortable as the sequence goes on.
